The Anticipation

It’s been a long time since I last used my backpack and for months it has been resting ever so quietly under my bed. Today I finally pulled it out, brushed the dust off, and began to think about what I should fill it with for my upcoming trip. I thought of the practical things, socks, toothpaste, shampoo… but there is something else I’ve packed without realizing it.

In 4 days, I am heading to Ireland for the first time. It will be my first passport stamp of the year, and my first time leaving the country in almost eight months. I feel like a bird who is about to be released from its cage, a fly who has just untangled itself from a spider web, and for the next nine days, I will be free.

The anticipation for my rtw trip this June is somewhere in there too, small at the moment, but steadily growing. As I embark on my first trip of the year, I can’t help but think of this quote too.

Reading those words, I am beginning to realize how happy I feel for actively choosing to live a life without regret, a life that I don’t need to escape from.

So, what am I going to do on the Emerald Isle?

I have deliberately planned as little as possible. I have a plane ticket and a train ticket and right now my only plan is to enjoy myself, and let the wind (and weather) decide where I should go. I am also leaving my computer behind and will write only in a journal. In the end, I think I will probably end up some place quiet, on the edge of a windy peninsula or in a pub somewhere with really good soup.

I can’t wait.

What do you think? How do you prepare for an upcoming trip?

  1. Oh, I’m so jealous! We went to Ireland in 2008 and absolutely loved it! I can’t wait to go back. I’m looking forward to reading your blog posts about it.

  2. Thanks for sharing this Seth Godin quote. I haven’t read it before and it was exactly what I needed to hear today. Thank you! Sounds like a good plan to not make many plans. While booking accommodations and preparing more in advance can have its advantages, you don’t really need more than tickets to get where you need to be plus the things you choose to bring. Everything else one can figure out along the way. I admire your decision to leave the computer at home and only bring a journal.

    • It’s a great quote isn’t it? I don’t remember when I first read it but it immediately made me stop and think. I tend to over-plan sometimes so not planning anything making me both excited and anxious!
