Photo of the Week: In Flight

Canada Summer 2011 783
An Atlantic Puffin, taking flight through the chilly North Atlantic water.

I took this photo during a whale-watching cruise on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. Almost 95% of all puffins in North America breed on the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador, building their nests in crevices on the rocky cliffs. The puffin is the provincial bird, and has many nicknames, including “parrot of the sea” and “little brother of the north”.
